Car Free Days

It is very likely that you used your car to travel to the Lake District, so why not leave the car with us and try a car free day. It will also help to reduce traffic on our roads and improve the environment you have come to visit. The area around Hawkshead is ideally suited for a car free day with many options for everyone, including young families. So whether it’s a gentle stroll and a pub lunch, or challenging mountain biking, there will by a car free option that will suit you.

Here are some suggestions.

Visit nearby Coniston

Grizedale Forest

Walk to the Grizedale visitors centre direct from the house about 3 miles, or Mountain bike – hire at campsite in village. Return (seasonal bus) or circular walk/ride

Lake Windermere

Bus (seasonal) to ferry, or walk over Claife Heights about 5 miles. Very nice picnic spot, excellent for children on this side of the lake, just beyond the ferry.
Use the ferry to cross the lake – walk/bus (seasonal) into Bowness 10 mins. Boat hire, boat trips and many shops etc. 
Windermere – lake cruises
You can take the boat to Ambleside, or alternatively go south to Lakeside – Aquirium on the Lake – Haverthwaite Steam railway. Return – retrace steps.
