Car Free DaysIt is very likely that you used your car to travel to the Lake District, so why not leave the car with us and try a car free day. It will also help to reduce traffic on our roads and improve the environment you have come to visit. The area around Hawkshead is ideally suited for a car free day with many options for everyone, including young families. So whether it’s a gentle stroll and a pub lunch, or challenging mountain biking, there will by a car free option that will suit you. Here are some suggestions. Visit nearby ConistonWalk via Tarn Hows and the Cumbria way, about 4 miles, or take the bus. (505) In Coniston – walks – boat hire on lake –picnics - boat trips & visit Brantwood. Return – you can retrace you steps, or walk through Grizdale Forest. If you take the bus (505) watch the time of the last bus back, which is quite early.Grizedale ForestWalk to the Grizedale visitors centre direct from the house about 3 miles, or Mountain bike – hire at campsite in village. Return (seasonal bus) or circular walk/ride Lake WindermereBus (seasonal) to ferry, or walk over Claife Heights about 5 miles. Very nice picnic spot, excellent for children on this side of the lake, just beyond the ferry. Mountain bikeBike hire in the village.
