Caring for our environment

These are some of the ways we hope to achieve our policy: -

Reduce

  • Thermostatic radiator valves on all radiators.
  • New gas central heating boilers 2002
  • Hot water thermostat set at 60c.
  • Showers in all rooms.
  • Double-glazing in all rooms.
  • New loft insulation 2004.
  • Supporting local economy by all produce being sourced within National Park and/or 20 miles.
  • A number of low energy bulbs have been fitted. Others have been identified with a short-term programme to replace.
  • All accessible hot water and heating pipes insulated.
  • Locally sourced supply of sustainable wood used on log fires.
  • Water from stream in garden used to water plants.
  • Programme to use ‘A’ rated electrical appliances for replacements.
  • Toilet ‘Hippos’ fitted to reduce water consumption

Re-use

  • Bottled milk from local dairy-bottles returned.
  • Egg cartons returned - free range eggs delivered with the milk.
  • Members of the Tourism and Conservation Partnership.
  • Move towards the use of refilling toiletries etc.
  • Move towards ID/use of recycled paper products for toilet paper/tissues etc.

Recycle

  • Council doorstep recycling of bottles, cans and paper.
  • Garden/kitchen waste composted.
  • Shoes to local collection site.
  • Old magazines and Christmas/birthday cards to local schools for project use.
  • Plastic bottles etc taken to recycle site Ulverston Sports Centre

Dispose

  • Use of local council waste disposal depot for all suitable products.

You may like to help by:

  • Please do not leave any unnecessary lights on when you go out.
  • At night please close the curtains before you go out.
  • Please do not leave the TV on standby mode.
  • You can adjust the radiator valves in the bedroom and bathroom to suit your own comfort. (Too high a setting, with a need to have the windows open, will only contribute to wasting energy.)
  • Without an entrance porch our front door opens onto the main staircase of the house, please try not to leave it open; it is amazing how quickly the heat disappears.
  • Why not try a car free day. We are happy to give advice on local options.
  • Support local businesses, it helps keep them viable for us all.
  • Please place papers and bottles at the side of your room waste bin as it helps with our recycling.

Thank you.
Dougie and Andrea
